About Me
Hello there! My name is Juliette Arnold, and I am a senior at the University of Cincinnati double majoring in bassoon performance and biology! Just what is the bassoon? That, my friend, is the instrument I am holding in my picture to the left. No, it is not the same as an oboe.
Why did I choose to be a bassoon performance major? Well, I have always loved music. I have played piano since I was three years old, so I'd like to think I'm pretty proficient at that by now. And then at Farmwell Station Middle School I decided to join the band program there on clarinet. I was decent at that, but I didn't "love" it. Then, in my seventh grade year, I discovered the bassoon. I thought it was basically the coolest thing ever, so I kept on nagging both my parents and teachers to let me play it; and they finally relented! After that, I was in love. I went on to high school at Broad Run High School, and my love for music and the bassoon continued to flourish. By my junior year I had decided to pursue a degree in music performance, so that one day I would be the one people heard and saw perform at concerts or one portion of a soundtrack for a five star movie! Now I am currently working towards my goal of becoming a professional musician by attending the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Funnily enough, after 4 years of college I have decided that bassoon really isn't for me. But I will still be getting my degree, as well as a BA in Biology!
Well, enough about the bassoon. Other than music, I have a passion for the outdoors and animals. As a child I always went to a local park and took classes there to learn about nature and all the wildlife that surrounds us. As I got older and outgrew these classes, I decided to become a volunteer at this nature park, named Claude Moore Park. There I helped restore different areas of the park by completing projects such as creating a frog pond by the visitor center, planting gardens, and clearing trails of debris and branches so that people could easily and safely hike them while enjoying the outdoors. For a few summers I took my love for Claude Moore even further by actually getting a job there! Now I am able to be the head counselor for various camps throughout the summer, leading children throughout the park and teaching them about all of the wonderful wildlife that lives there. I loved this job; it brings back so many memories from my childhood of the hours and hours I spent there, and I am glad that I am able to return the knowledge about nature that I learned to the next generation. It is a fantastic job, and helped me figure out what I'm supposed to be doing in this world: I want to be a show trainer and performer for zoos and aquariums!
I think it is partly this love of nature and the outdoors that led me to declare a second major in biology. The other part being a fantastic teacher I had in high school named Mr. Steele. I was fortunate enough to be his student for both chemistry and AP biology, and I think it is because of him that I first decided to minor in biology and then decide to major. He always made class very interesting, not to mention very challenging! Since he has retired, I count myself very lucky to have known him as a teacher. As far as a career in biology, I think I have finally figured out where my passion and talents lie: I want to become an educator in zoos and aquariums. I have been very fortunate to have been given a position at the Cincinnati Zoo as a intern in the Wild Encounters department, and then to have been hired at the end of the season. It is the best job I could have asked for; I get to interact with the public, and animals, every day, and I love every minute of it! Even more exciting, I have just accepted an internship with the Cat Ambassador Program at the Cincinnati Zoo where I'll be working with cheetahs, servals, and ocelots among other animals! When I'm not at the zoo, I'm volunteering as a maintenance diver at the Newport Aquarium. That is a super fun activity, getting to help keep the exhibits pristine and also getting to occasionally feed the fish! Every dive is a great one, especially when I get to go into the shark tank!
I have recently joined Phi Mu, a new social sorority on campus. It's super fun, and I can honestly say it's the best decision I've made. I wish I had joined sooner! In addition to Phi Mu, I am also a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional women's music fraternity. This coming year I am the Vice President of Ritual!
As far as hobbies, I have recently taken up painting. I am no Leonardo da Vinci or Monet, but it is something fun to do. It's just something relaxing that I enjoy doing when I have the time. As a kid I played several sports, but the only two I was very serious about were soccer and volleyball. I was planning on playing both of these sports in high school, but due to an injury in my freshman year I was no longer able to continue. Now at the University of Cincinnati I plan to join in my sorority's intramural leagues! I also love just about any video game; if you ever want to play, let me know!
My family is great, too. I have an older year old sister, my mom, and my dad along with three cats, a dog, and 2 birds. My sister is my best friend, and her husband and son are great too! I just wish I could see them all more often! I am so glad that she, Mom and Dad are so supportive of me pursuing music and biology. It means so much to me that they will encourage me no matter what my endeavors!
Well, that's just a bit about me. Hopefully this will give you all some insight to my life!
